• Why do some individuals suffer from concussion related symptoms for 2 weeks and others for 2 years?
  • Why unresolved injuries in the neck, skull and jaw can really slow the healing process?
  • How can appropriate treatments help patients get rid of their commotions much faster?

I am Dr Francois Chaput, chiropractor.

Through my experience with dozens of patients who’ve suffered multiple concussions and head injuries, and with my knowledge of Applied Kinesiology and Active Release Techniques (ART), I have come to develop a special expertise regarding this condition that affects many people.

When we think of those injuries, we often think of athletes in hockey, football and other contact sports, and that’s certainly the case, but concussions also affect the victims of violence and road accidents, and many young children who sometimes accumulate an impressive number of falls.

My clinical experience, combined with collaboration with other experts such as neurologists, has convinced me that by improving injuries and protective reflexes in the neck, skull and jaw, we can help a patient to heal faster and finally get rid of the symptoms by fostering an environment where his or her body can move forward with natural occurring recovery mechanisms at a much quicker pace than with rest alone. Lingering injuries to these areas act like some sort of a break on the healing process.

How a well-designed treatment protocol by a qualified professional can help you recover from a blow to head

  • Restoration of hand-eye coordination
  • Increase in the concentration level by restoring the intellectual faculties (both the “artistic” side and the “Cartesian” side)
  • Decrease emotional distress such as:
     anxiety
     fear
     aggressiveness
     hyperactivity
     agitation
  • Reduction / elimination of « secondary symptoms » such as:
     Shoulder pain
     Pain in teeth or jaw
     Hip problems
     Pain in lower back

Because in almost all the cases I’ve encountered so far, the head trauma also affected muscles, nerves and the bone structure in these areas, as well as in the neck, cranium, and the jaw. By correcting those connected issues, it creates an ideal environment for the body and brain to begin the healing process. I have seen it first hand time and time again. Rest is not the only solution.

Years ago, the #1 recommendation for heart attack survivors and candidates was complete rest, and to never indulge in sports or activities that could stress the heart. We now know otherwise. I venture to say it’s currently the same kind of recommendations for concussions at this time.

I believe qualified doctors and professionals have developed a great expertise at analyzing the symptoms of concussions, are skilled at gauging the progress of a patient on his way to recovery, and can determine how much he or she can push to get back to his or her previous shape. Yet the #1 recuperation tool suggested is still rest, much like it was for heart attack victims years ago.

I believe there can be other ways that fully respect the patient’s abilities to heal, and that help speed the process towards complete recovery.
